## Who they are

Mr. Gold is Albert's teacher, a landlady-ridden bachelor drawn to the warmth of Mrs. Brown's sitting-room and to Agatha's complexion and figure. Agatha, queenly and calculating, weighs marriage to him as an advantage to Albert's prospects, and Gold himself walks home full of rosy visions. His fatal flaw is complacency: comfortably inflated with tea and a good opinion of himself, he destroys his own chances without ever knowing what snuffed them out, and his failure shapes the household Albert grows up in.
