## Who they are

Bronson flies Digby and Eunice out over the water, a working airman caught up in a scheme he does not fully see. When the plane sinks, Digby's cunning strap-work leaves him trapped while the others are hauled aboard the waiting cutter, and his disappearance is the moment the novel's menace turns openly murderous. His drowning marks the line past which Digby can no longer pretend to be anything but ruthless.
