## Who they are

Rowley works the shaft alongside Bell and the narrator, measuring the live ground in yards and refusing to believe the chamber lies elsewhere. When the group splits for reliefs or reconnaissance, he is left in charge of the oubliette — a post that demands nerve as much as muscle. His quiet persistence is the backbone of the digging operation, and his presence in the dungeon is what makes the others' absences survivable.
