## Who they are

Givens runs the Knights of Nordica out of a barn-like hall on Peachtree Street, trading on his old Klan connections and a talent for whipping up racial panic. His real devotion is to the collection plate, and he warms instantly to any smooth-talking stranger who might widen the revenue stream. As the movement's public face, he gives the novel's racial hysteria a venal, almost comic embodiment.
