# Helen Givens — Black No More character guide

> Helen Givens in Black No More by George Schuyler.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Helen

**First appearance:** 0003-i

## Snapshot

The Grand Wizard's beautiful daughter longs for an educated man, and mistakes the smooth-talking organizer who courts her for one.

## Who they are

Helen has always wanted a scientist, a literary man, someone above the lowbrows her father's movement attracts. She holds off on Matthew's first proposal only because his pockets look thin, then softens as the Nordica treasury swells. Her marriage on the auditorium stage makes her a prize in the racial masquerade, and her genteel pretensions quietly expose the movement's shabbiness.
