Wetzel is the legendary Indian fighter whose name alone quiets a room, a man of few words who tells his tales only when Betty coaxes him. His story of sparing a wounded young Shawnee, and of that brave later cutting his bonds at the stake, reveals a code deeper than vengeance. In a settlement braced for war, he embodies both the frontier's brutal necessity and its strange, unexpected mercies.
