## Who they are

Tirzah was raised in the house of Hur and cast out with her mother when the family fell, her beauty eaten away until she and her mother are indistinguishable, witch-like, unclean. Her love for Judah survives the ruin: she kneels to kiss his sleeping hand and is pulled back by the law of the leper. Her suffering is the measure of what Rome took from Ben-Hur, and her hidden survival drives his long hope of restoration.
