Chapter 1

George Duroy, a former soldier with little money, leaves a restaurant in Paris on a hot June evening. He wanders the streets, feeling the heat and his own poverty, and contemplates his desire for a love affair. He runs into his old friend Charles Forestier, who is now a journalist. Forestier treats him to drinks and suggests Duroy try journalism. He invites Duroy to a dinner the next evening to meet his boss and other influential people, and gives him money to buy proper clothes. They go to the Folies Bergère, where Duroy is noticed by women, and he ends up leaving with one of them.
Chapter 2

Duroy attends a dinner at the Forestiers' home, where he meets influential figures including Monsieur Walter, Jacques Rival, Norbert de Varenne, and Madame de Marelle. He impresses the guests with his knowledge of Algeria, leading Walter to offer him a position writing articles for La Vie Française. Duroy struggles with his appearance and social anxiety but gains confidence through the evening.

He seeks help from his friend Forestier, who directs him to his wife, Madeleine. During their conversation, the Count de Vaudrec arrives, and Duroy feels an inexplicable unease. Later, he visits the newspaper office, where he observes the bustling environment and Forestier's playful demeanor.

George Duroy wakes early, eager to see his first article in print. He buys the Vie Française and is overjoyed to find his piece, 'Recollections of a Chasseur d'Afrique,' published under his name. He quits his job at the railway office and spends the day with Saint-Potin, learning the ropes of journalism. That evening, he visits the Folies Bergère and reconnects with Rachel, spending the night with her. The next morning, he discovers his second article was not published. Monsieur Walter tells him that Forestier found it inadequate and he must rewrite it. Forestier then instructs him to accompany Saint-Potin on interviews with a Chinese General and an Indian Rajah, while Saint-Potin shares cynical insights about their boss, Monsieur Walter.

Two months have passed, and Duroy is frustrated by his slow progress as a journalist. He feels trapped in his mediocre position and humiliated by the closed doors of high society. He visits Madame de Marelle, who receives him warmly, and they begin a passionate affair. However, Duroy's financial situation is dire; he is deeply in debt and struggles to maintain his lifestyle. His poverty leads to tension with Clotilde, who wants to go out while he cannot afford it. A confrontation ensues, and he is forced to confess his lack of money, which momentarily resolves the conflict.
