# Eve Durand — Behind That Curtain character guide

> Eve Durand in Behind That Curtain by Earl Derr Biggers.

**Role:** major

**Also known as:** Eve, Eve Durand Flannery

**First appearance:** 0003-ii-what-happened-to-eve-durand

## Snapshot

A woman who vanished from Peshawar fifteen years ago and may now walk among the dinner guests under another name, her blonde hair and blue eyes the puzzle at the case's heart.

## Who they are

Eve Durand is the woman the whole mystery circles, the reason Charlie Chan counsels cherchez la femme and the reason Sir Frederic gathered certain guests to his table. She may be Eileen Enderby with darkened hair, or Gloria Garland with a manufactured name, or someone else entirely, and each candidate carries her own suspicious stains and broken pearls. Her fear of exposure and her hold over men like Beetham and Durand make her the still center of a story about old sins catching up in a San Francisco drawing room.
