Concepts
Ideas that structure Before Adam by Jack London — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Racial Memory and Atavism
The protagonist's dreams are explained as inherited racial memories from his prehistoric ancestors, with his 'other-self' Big-Tooth representing a living connection to the Mid-Pleistocene era and the atavistic traits that persist in modern humans.
Evolution and Human Origins
The book explores the gradual development of early hominids, depicting the physical, social, and cognitive evolution from tree-dwelling ancestors toward modern humans, including the emergence of language, tools, and social structures.
Fear and Survival
The narrative is dominated by primal fear—fear of predators, the dark, and other hostile forces—which drives the behavior of the Folk and shapes their instinct for survival in a dangerous prehistoric world.
Primitive Society and Social Organization
The Folk live in a rudimentary social structure with early forms of monogamy, communal living, and rudimentary customs, contrasting with the more advanced Fire People and highlighting the slow progress of civilization.
Duality of Self
The protagonist experiences a split personality between his modern waking self and his prehistoric dream self, illustrating the coexistence of ancient instincts within a contemporary human consciousness.
Violence and Atavistic Aggression
Characters like Red-Eye embody raw, atavistic violence and brutality, including murder and abuse, reflecting the harshness of primitive life and the darker impulses that linger in human heredity.
Progress and Innovation
The slow development of tools, such as the use of gourds for water storage and the invention of the catamaran, illustrates the incremental and often accidental nature of technological progress among early humans.
Conflict Between Species and Tribes
The Folk face constant threats from carnivorous animals, the Tree People, and the more advanced Fire People, highlighting inter-species and inter-tribal competition for territory and survival.
