## Who they are

The Swift One is Big-Tooth's preferred companion — soft-voiced, strong, and uninterested in fighting, the one he seeks out for food and bird-nesting. She refuses to join Lop-Ear and the other young people, dropping behind and disappearing whenever he brings her near them, and she never lets him find her tree-shelter. Their mutual liking points toward mating, but her secrecy and separateness mark her as something the tribe cannot quite absorb — a private bond forming in a world that has no room for privacy.
