Lubin moves through the political scenes as Burge's foil, less genial and more wary, the kind of man who asks what a grand idea will cost and who will pay for it. He is unconvinced by the brothers' talk of extended life and treats their gospel as one more scheme to be managed rather than believed. His skepticism gives the play its necessary friction, forcing the Barnabas vision to answer to the ordinary instincts of men who expect to die on schedule.
