# How does Béatrix develop the theme of Illusion vs. Reality?

> Béatrix by Honoré de Balzac

## Answer

Béatrix by Honoré de Balzac develops Illusion vs. Reality across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Characters grapple with the gap between idealized love and harsh reality, as seen in the honeymoon's disillusionment, the deception in romantic relationships, and the fleeting nature of beauty and passion.

Béatrix's enigmatic persona creates an illusion of perfection that contrasts with the complex realities of her character and situation.

Calyste's idealized perception of Béatrix and Conti contrasts with the more cynical views of Claude Vignon and the practical concerns of his mother.

Béatrix's coquettish behavior and the characters' self-deceptions blur the line between genuine feeling and social performance.
