# Mademoiselle de Pen-Hoël — Béatrix character guide

> Mademoiselle de Pen-Hoël in Béatrix by Honoré de Balzac.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Pen-Hoël, Old Mademoiselle de Pen-Hoël

**First appearance:** 0001-b-atrix

## Snapshot

An elderly Breton noblewoman of fierce piety and narrow provincial views, she guards the old family traditions and distrusts every outsider who threatens them.

## Who they are

Mademoiselle de Pen-Hoël belongs to the closed, devout world of Guérande, where lineage, land, and Catholic observance define a person's worth. She watches over Calyste's family interests with a suspicious eye, particularly toward the glamorous outsiders at Les Touches. Her provincial rigidity provides the moral counterweight to Parisian sophistication, and her judgments shape the pressures bearing on Calyste as he navigates between two worlds.
