# Charlotte de Kergarouët — Béatrix character guide

> Charlotte de Kergarouët in Béatrix by Honoré de Balzac.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Charlotte, little Charlotte

**First appearance:** 0001-b-atrix

## Snapshot

A young heiress whose hand once seemed destined for Calyste, she embodies the safe, sanctioned future he keeps failing to choose.

## Who they are

Charlotte belongs to the provincial world of Guérande, where marriage is a matter of family arrangement and quiet suitability. She represents the path Calyste's mother would approve — a match without the fever of Parisian salons or the dangerous glamour of an older woman. Her presence sharpens the novel's central tension between duty and desire, making every step Calyste takes toward Béatrix a small betrayal of the life he might have had.
