Secrecy and Scandal
A central theme is the destructive power of hidden secrets, particularly Aurora's mysterious past—her runaway marriage and the missing year in Paris—which threatens her relationships and social standing.
Love vs. Duty
Characters struggle between romantic love and societal or familial duty, exemplified by Talbot Bulstrode's conflict between his pride and his passion for Aurora, and John Mellish's unconditional devotion.
Wealth and Power
Aurora's immense fortune as a banker's heiress shapes her life, attracting fortune hunters like James Conyers and granting her a degree of freedom, yet also making her a target for exploitation.
Gender and Independence
Aurora's 'fast' nature—her love of horses, hunting, and defiance of feminine norms—highlights the tension between female independence and the restrictive expectations of Victorian womanhood.
Jealousy and Betrayal
Jealousy and betrayal drive the plot, from Talbot's suspicion of Aurora's past to the machinations of characters like Mrs. Powell, and the ultimate violence surrounding the trainer James Conyers.
Redemption and Forgiveness
