# Herman Melville — Aspects of the Novel character guide

> Herman Melville in Aspects of the Novel by E. M. Forster.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Melville

**First appearance:** 0003-i-introductory

## Snapshot

The whaling visionary Forster summons to show how prophecy and fantasy can invade the novel, dragging readers past curiosity into a stranger, darker gravity.

## Who they are

Forster treats Melville less as a man than as a test case: the novelist whose imagination refuses the tidy channels of plot and character and reaches instead for the prophetic. He stands apart from the drawing-room realists, his work charged with a wildness that Forster finds both alien and indispensable. His presence in the argument matters because he proves that fiction can carry a weight beyond manners — that the novel's actors need not always be merely human.
