## Snapshot

Grantley Caypor's self-effacing German wife, dusty and watchful, whose quiet loyalty to her husband may be the hinge on which his fate turns.

## Who they are

Mrs. Caypor sits beside her husband in the pension dining-room, self-effaced and dusty, the sort of woman Ashenden would not have noticed twice — until she murmurs something to Caypor and his eyes turn, sharp and appraising, toward the stranger. She is German, married to an Englishman in wartime Switzerland, and her devotion to him is total. When Ashenden later seeks her out, that devotion will become the most dangerous thing about her.
