He is English, his wife is German, and his fluent German carries a marked English accent — a small detail Ashenden files away. When Mrs. Caypor notices the stranger and murmurs to her husband, Caypor's gaze fixes on Ashenden, and the pleasant holiday atmosphere begins to curdle into something watchful.
