## Who they are

Giulia Lazzari arrives in Thonon under Ashenden's ambiguous custody: no handcuffs, no guards at her door, only a promise not to write or leave without his knowledge. She watches him with perplexity, unable to reconcile his courtesy with the fact that she is a prisoner, and within a quarter of an hour of arrival she is already testing the limits of her parole. Her presence forces Ashenden to confront the difference between the rules of his trade and the human being in front of him.
