# Anastasia Alexandrovna Leonidov — Ashenden character guide

> Anastasia Alexandrovna Leonidov in Ashenden by W. Somerset Maugham.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Anastasia Alexandrovna, Anastasia

**First appearance:** 0015-xiv-a-chance-acquaintance

## Snapshot

A flamboyant Russian émigré with Tartar cheekbones and melancholy eyes, in whom Ashenden once chased the romance of Russia and lost his heart.

## Who they are

Anastasia Alexandrovna moves through revolutionary circles with a woman of character's certainty, discussing Turgenev and Tolstoy while her gentle, unworthy husband Vladimir trails behind her. Ashenden's old passion for her returns when he needs her help in Russia, and she becomes both a link to his romantic past and a practical ally in a country he cannot read. Her mixture of ideology, appetite, and loyalty makes her one of the book's most vivid presences.
