A farmer who takes the Bundrens in for a night, feeds them, and watches their strange procession with the resignation of a man who has seen too much already.

## Who they are

Armstid gives the family shelter when the rain and the road have beaten them down, and in return he gets a night of Anse's complaints and the smell of a week-dead body in his barn. He is generous in the way rural people are generous — grudgingly, out of necessity, because there is no one else. His brief hospitality shows how the Bundrens' errand looks from outside: not noble, not tragic, just strange and costly to everyone nearby.
