# How does Anne of the Island develop the theme of Mortality and the Meaning of Life?

> Anne of the Island by L. M. Montgomery

## Answer

Anne of the Island by L. M. Montgomery develops Mortality and the Meaning of Life across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Ruby Gillis's death prompts Anne to contemplate the brevity of life and the importance of seeking higher spiritual and moral goals, rather than being consumed by trivial or earthly concerns.

Anne reflects on epitaphs in the cemetery, contemplating faithfulness and the legacy one leaves behind.

Ruby Gillis's galloping consumption forces Anne to confront the reality of death. Ruby's frantic gaiety and denial contrast with the quiet acceptance of the natural world, prompting reflections on what is truly important.

Ruby's fear of death and Anne's reflections on heaven highlight the struggle to find meaning in the face of mortality.
