# Hearne — An Antarctic Mystery character guide

> Hearne in An Antarctic Mystery by Jules Verne.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** a Hearne

**First appearance:** 0008-ix-fitting-out-the-halbrane

## Snapshot

A disaffected sailor whose whispered grievances against the captain's endless quest threaten to turn the Halbrane's crew against its purpose.

## Who they are

Hearne works on his shipmates' fears, arguing that the promised rewards no longer justify a voyage stretching deeper into unknown ice. He is less a villain than an accelerant—giving voice to resentments the captain's obsession has quietly bred. His agitation turns the expedition's internal weather as dangerous as anything the Antarctic can throw at it.
