# Esta Griffiths — An American Tragedy character guide

> Esta Griffiths in An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Esta

**First appearance:** 0000-book-i

## Snapshot

Clyde's older sister, whose runaway elopement and subsequent destitution become the family's first open wound and Clyde's earliest lesson in the cost of desire.

## Who they are

Esta vanishes from the mission with a traveling actor, then returns in disgrace and illness, forcing her mother to scrape together fifty dollars for medical care. The sum lands on Clyde at the exact moment he is hoarding the same amount for Hortense, and his lie to his mother about having no money becomes his first deliberate, shameful betrayal of family for appetite. Esta's ruin haunts the novel as the template Clyde both dreads and unconsciously repeats.
