# How does Almayer’s Folly develop the theme of Fate and Free Will?

> Almayer’s Folly by Joseph Conrad

## Answer

Almayer’s Folly by Joseph Conrad develops Fate and Free Will across the chapters the companion marks for this theme.

Characters struggle against predetermined outcomes, such as Almayer's inescapable poverty and Nina's predetermined role, yet their choices—like Nina's decision to leave with Dain—demonstrate a struggle for agency.

The question 'Who among us has not had...' suggests a shared fate, yet the individual journey from promise to exile implies personal choices and consequences.

Babalatchi's remark 'No man can escape his fate' underscores the tension between characters' choices and the inevitable consequences of their actions.

Taminah's decision to act on her own will contrasts with the fatalistic attitudes of Abdulla, who accepts Dain's supposed death as fate.
