Good is the expedition's comic relief and its most socially adaptable member — short, dark, perpetually adjusting his eyeglass, and mortified by his expanding waistline. Sir Henry teases him about idleness and overfeeding, but beneath the vanity lies a steady officer and a man of real charm. In Zu-Vendis, that charm proves unexpectedly consequential: one of the twin queens falls for him, pulling him into a political storm he never sought.
