> The Gryphon in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Gryphon, The Gryphon, a Gryphon

**First appearance:** 0010-ix-the-mock-turtle-s-story

## Snapshot

A lion-eagle hybrid who drags Alice off to hear the Mock Turtle's sorrows and scolds her for asking questions any sensible creature should already know.

## Who they are

He is the Mock Turtle's rough, impatient companion, urging him to "drive on, old fellow" and telling Alice to hold her tongue when she interrupts. He treats Wonderland's absurdities as common knowledge, and his casual contempt for Alice's ordinary curiosity is part of what makes her feel, again and again, like the only person in the room who doesn't know the rules. His presence turns the Mock Turtle's grief into a kind of performance the two of them share, half sympathy and half show.
