## Who they are

Apollo is the god the Chorus calls on as Paian and the god whose oracle shapes the war's beginning, a presence felt in prophecy, plague, and the riddling signs Calchas reads for the fleet. In tragedy he is often a sinister figure, and here his hand lies heavy on Cassandra, whom he loved, gifted, and then punished with disbelief. He matters because the play's questions about fate, knowledge, and divine justice keep circling back to him, and his shadow falls across the palace long before any character names what is coming.
