Concepts
Ideas that structure After London by Richard Jefferies — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Collapse of Civilization
The book depicts a post-apocalyptic England where advanced technology and society have fallen, leaving a barbaric world of scattered settlements, lost knowledge, and a poisoned, overgrown landscape.
Social Class and Servitude
A rigid class system dominates, with nobles, free retainers, and slaves (called 'servants'), where laws are manipulated to reduce people to bondage and social status dictates every interaction.
Nature and Wilderness
The land has reverted to a vast, untamed forest filled with wild animals, poisonous marshes, and supernatural threats, shaping the lives and dangers faced by the remaining human population.
Love and Sacrifice
Felix’s deep love for Aurora drives his hazardous journey and willingness to endure humiliation, yet his pride and ambition create conflict between his devotion and his desire for personal achievement.
War and Conflict
Constant warfare among petty kingdoms, republics, and invading Welsh, Irish, and Scots forces defines the political landscape, with mercenaries, sieges, and piracy causing widespread suffering.
Loss of Knowledge
The ancients’ scientific and technological marvels (e.g., malleable glass, iron chariots, wire communication) are reduced to legends or incomprehensible relics, with the surviving population unable to recreate them.
Superstition and Faith
The narrative contrasts Aurora’s clear, hopeful faith with Felix’s scientific skepticism and the pervasive superstitions about demons, omens, and the poisoned, haunted ruins of London.
Individual vs. Society
Felix’s alienation from the corrupt, status-obsessed court and his solitary forest life highlight his struggle against societal norms, leading him to reject class prejudice and seek his own path.
