Concepts
Ideas that structure Adam’s Breed by Radclyffe Hall — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Identity and Belonging
Gian-Luca struggles with his dual Italian-English heritage, feeling alienated from both cultures, as seen in his schoolyard exclusion and his cousin Sisto insisting he is English despite his Italian claims.
Motherhood and Loss
The book explores maternal love, grief, and sacrifice through Teresa's unassuageable sorrow for her daughter Olga, Rosa's role as a wet nurse, and Maddalena's longing for a child, highlighting the pain of unfulfilled or severed maternal bonds.
Religion and Hypocrisy
Religious devotion is portrayed as both a comfort and a tool for judgment, with characters like Signora Rocca and Sisto using piety to condemn others, while Gian-Luca's refusal to attend Mass causes familial conflict.
Class and Servitude
Gian-Luca's work as a headwaiter reveals the power dynamics between servers and clients, where he outwardly flatters the wealthy while inwardly resenting them, feeling like a machine that is used and discarded.
Alienation and Loneliness
Despite being surrounded by family and clients, Gian-Luca experiences profound isolation, often feeling like 'alien flesh' to his grandmother and unable to connect fully even with his wife Maddalena.
Cruelty and Suffering
The narrative highlights both human and animal suffering, from Gian-Luca's childhood sorrows to the brutal treatment of farm animals by peasants, and his haunting encounter with a blind beggar child.
Love and Marriage
Marriage is depicted as a complex bond of duty, loneliness, and unfulfilled passion, as Maddalena gives selfless love while Gian-Luca remains emotionally distant, using her to bear his own loneliness.
Ambition and Success
Gian-Luca's drive to rise from waiter to restaurant owner is a central motivation, yet his success brings bitterness and a sense of emptiness, as he views his clients as 'greedy children' he must manipulate.
