# Captain Green — A Yankee in the Trenches character guide

> Captain Green in A Yankee in the Trenches by Robert Derby Holmes.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0004-i-joining-the-british-army

## Snapshot

The company commander whose clipped, unflappable orders keep Holmes's outfit moving through dust-choked marches and filthy billets, even when every man is spent.

## Who they are

Captain Green sits at the top of the narrator's immediate chain of command, the officer whose word sends corporals trotting off to shoulder another man's rifle on a ninety-degree hike. His authority is absolute but impersonal: the men are tools to be kept functional, and complaints earn only a raised eyebrow and a reminder to set an example. He matters because he embodies the rigid machinery Holmes must navigate, the everyday discipline that grinds down soldiers long before the enemy does.
