# Mrs. Allonby — A Woman of No Importance character guide

> Mrs. Allonby in A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** dear Mrs. Allonby, Mrs. Allonby

**First appearance:** 0003-a-woman-of-no-importance

## Snapshot

A dazzling, restless society wife, she trades paradoxes with Lord Illingworth and treats marriage as a game she intends to keep winning.

## Who they are

Mrs. Allonby is the wittiest woman in Lady Hunstanton's circle, dispensing theories on flirtation, fire, and the strategic value of never leaving men alone. Her banter with Lord Illingworth is the play's sharpest comedy, but it also exposes how little either of them believes in anything. She is the society Mrs. Arbuthnot has been exiled from, and her glitter makes that exile sting.
