# Lady Hunstanton — A Woman of No Importance character guide

> Lady Hunstanton in A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** dear Lady Hunstanton, Lady Hunstanton

**First appearance:** 0003-a-woman-of-no-importance

## Snapshot

A genial, slightly muddled hostess, she assembles the wits and gossips of London at Hunstanton and misses half of what passes under her roof.

## Who they are

Lady Hunstanton presides over her country house with benevolent vagueness, delighted by clever talk she only partly follows and oblivious to the American girl absorbing every word. Her drawing room is the stage on which Wilde's epigrams collide, and her inability to control the conversation is precisely what lets it sparkle. She means no harm and sees no harm, which is its own quiet indictment.
