## Who they are

He stands among the Caucasian barristers of the national debate, well-meaning and articulate, yet not to blame if he cannot quite put himself in the dark man's place. The narrator uses him to show that goodwill is not the same as firsthand knowledge. His role in the early argument is to prove that even fair-minded white voices leave a gap only the Black Woman can fill.
