# Lord Featherstone — A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder character guide

> Lord Featherstone in A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder by James De Mille.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Featherstone, Here Featherstone

**First appearance:** 0000-i-the-finding-of-the-copper-cylinder

## Snapshot

A wealthy English lord whose yacht and leisure make him host to the discovery, though he mostly just wants the reading to continue.

## Who they are

Featherstone is the affable aristocrat whose expedition provides the setting for the cylinder's unearthing, and whose easy 'By Jove!' punctuates the debate over its authenticity. He lacks Melick's imagination and the doctor's expertise, but his willingness to keep the manuscript moving forward keeps the frame story alive. His mild impatience to hear more mirrors the reader's own curiosity, making him the quiet host of the whole enterprise.
