# Atam — A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder character guide

> Atam in A Strange Manuscript Found in a Copper Cylinder by James De Mille.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Atam - or, O Atam

**First appearance:** 0007-viii-the-cave-dwellers

## Snapshot

A Kosekin chief whose guidance through his people's inverted customs becomes both a lifeline and a trap for the stranded narrator.

## Who they are

Atam moves within the Kosekin hierarchy as an authority who can explain, escort, and vouch for the foreigner in a society where every courtesy is a threat. His assistance is genuine, but it operates inside a moral system where helping someone toward death is kindness. His presence in the middle chapters shows how the narrator must rely on insiders even as their values make every alliance precarious.
