## Who they are

Assigned by Tars Tarkas to guard the prisoner, Woola instead becomes John Carter's devoted slave the moment laughter and a rubbed head break through his training. His loyalty creates a quiet tension: he is bound by duty to a cruel master yet will follow Carter past the city's forbidden boundary, dead or alive. More than a pet, he is Carter's first proof that affection can survive on Barsoom, and his devotion repeatedly widens the captive's narrow world.
