## Who they are

Samuel Wilberforce Gosling opens the bowling for Beckford with a fury that terrifies clergymen and small cover-points alike, and his truculent streak on the field is matched only by his irritation when his analysis gets spoiled. He is Gosling's understudy's senior partner, so to speak—the man whose spell depends on the Bishop turning up to bowl at the other end. When the Bishop fails to appear, Gosling's rhythm and the match itself begin to unravel, making him the first casualty of the mystery that drives the plot.
