Chapter 1
The End of the Holidays

Chapter 2
Opening Day
It is the first day of the autumn term at the Girls' College in Grovebury, and the long-awaited new college building is finally opened. Ingred Saxon, humiliated by her family's inability to return to Rotherwood, reacts sharply to her classmates' questions. She becomes a weekly boarder at the hostel, where she joins Verity Richmond, Nora Clifford, and Fil Trevor. The four girls form a secret pact called 'The Foursome League' to support each other. The chapter also describes the opening ceremony of the new college, with distinguished guests and the entire school assembled.
Chapter 3
Wynch-on-the-Wold
Ingred adjusts to life at the new college and as a boarder, finding comfort in her roommates and the community spirit. She struggles with Miss Strong's sarcastic teaching style and feels slighted by former friends due to her family's reduced circumstances. The chapter ends with Ingred returning home to Wynchcote, where she enjoys a peaceful tea with her family and begins to appreciate their simpler life.
Chapter 4
IV: Intruder Bess
Ingred returns to school after a weekend at home, struggling to focus on her studies. She has her first piano lesson with Dr. Linton, who is eccentric but encouraging. Bess Haselford arrives as a new student, and Ingred initially likes her, but when she learns Bess lives at Rotherwood—the house Ingred's family lost—she becomes cold and resentful. Meanwhile, the school prepares for a form election to choose a warden for the new College Council.
Chapter 5
V: The Fifth-Form Fête
The chapter describes the Fifth-Form's fête, where the girls enjoy tea and cakes, followed by an impromptu concert. Ingred reluctantly accompanies Bess Haselford on the piano as Bess plays the violin, showcasing her skill. The event includes an invasion by the Sixth Form and a disruption by younger students, highlighting social dynamics and rivalry.
