Chapter 2
A Passage to India
The novel opens in Chandrapore, India, introducing the city's landscape and the social divisions between the British colonizers and the Indian population. Dr. Aziz, a young Muslim physician, is summoned by his British superior Major Callendar but finds himself waiting and eventually visiting a mosque where he meets Mrs. Moore, an elderly Englishwoman who shows him genuine kindness. Their encounter begins an unlikely friendship that challenges the racial and cultural barriers of colonial India.
Chapter 3
Part I: Mosque
Dr. Aziz, a young Indian Muslim physician, is summoned by his British superior Major Callendar but finds him gone. He visits a mosque where he meets Mrs. Moore, an elderly Englishwoman, and they have a respectful conversation. Mrs. Moore's son Ronny Heaslop is the City Magistrate. Aziz is later invited to a 'Bridge Party' by the Collector, intended to bring Indians and English together. Aziz plans an expedition to the Marabar Caves for Mrs. Moore and her companion Adela Quested.

The opening chapter describes the city of Chandrapore, contrasting the mean, monotonous Indian town along the Ganges with the elevated, orderly civil station inhabited by the English. The Marabar Hills, containing the extraordinary caves, are introduced as a distant, mysterious presence.
Chapter 5
Chapter II
Aziz, Hamidullah, and Mahmoud Ali discuss the English in India, recalling exceptions like Mrs. Bannister and Queen Victoria, but generalizing about Englishwomen's haughtiness. Aziz later visits Hamidullah's wife, then goes to the mosque where he meets Mrs. Moore, an elderly Englishwoman. They have a warm conversation, discovering they both have two sons and a daughter. Aziz vents about his mistreatment by the Callendars, and Mrs. Moore sympathizes, leading Aziz to feel a deep connection.
