Fairy queen whose refusal to surrender a changeling boy provokes her husband's revenge and lands her in love with a weaver wearing an ass's head.

## Who they are

Titania holds her ground against Oberon over the Indian boy, and her defiance — rooted in memory of the child's mother — is the one thing in the wood that will not bend to a king's will. Drugged with love-juice, she dotes on Bottom with lavish, uncomprehending tenderness, a queen reduced to adoring a monster. Her waking horror ('how mine eyes do loathe his visage now') restores the fairy marriage and lets the mortal plot resolve.
