Chapter 2
Scene I
Theseus and Hippolyta discuss their upcoming wedding. Egeus enters with a complaint against his daughter Hermia, who refuses to marry Demetrius as her father commands, instead loving Lysander. Theseus gives Hermia until the next new moon to obey her father or face death or a life of chastity. Lysander and Hermia plan to elope to his aunt's house outside Athens. Helena, who loves Demetrius, decides to tell him of their plan in hopes of winning his favor.
Chapter 3
Scene II
The mechanicals gather at Quince's house to assign roles for their play, 'Pyramus and Thisbe,' to be performed at Theseus and Hippolyta's wedding. Bottom eagerly volunteers for multiple parts, but Quince insists he play Pyramus. The group agrees to rehearse in the palace wood by moonlight to avoid detection.

Chapter 5
Scene I
In the woods near Athens, Oberon and Titania quarrel over a changeling boy, causing natural chaos. Oberon sends Puck to fetch a love potion to trick Titania, and later witnesses Demetrius rejecting Helena, prompting him to order Puck to use the potion on Demetrius to make him fall for Helena.
