# Taki — A Daughter of the Samurai character guide

> Taki in A Daughter of the Samurai by Etsu Inagaki Sugimoto.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Faithful Taki

**First appearance:** 0004-i-winters-in-echigo

## Snapshot

Faithful Taki serves Etsu from Japan to America, a maid whose devotion crosses an ocean and survives every change of fortune.

## Who they are

Taki is the servant who stays, following Etsu from the old household into a foreign land where neither of them quite belongs. Her loyalty is absolute but not unthinking, and the strain of transplanting a Japanese life into American soil falls on her as much as on her mistress. She matters because she is the constant companion of Etsu's transformation, the one witness who sees both the samurai daughter and the American wife.
