# Lady Dudley — A Daughter of Eve character guide

> Lady Dudley in A Daughter of Eve by Honoré de Balzac.

**Role:** supporting

**First appearance:** 0001-a-daughter-of-eve

## Snapshot

An English aristocrat of formidable beauty and former mistress of Félix de Vandenesse, whose very existence in Paris makes his wife's hard-won happiness feel provisional.

## Who they are

Lady Dudley is the woman who formed Félix, the passion of his earlier life whose memory lingers in every room he enters, and her return to Parisian society is a quiet earthquake beneath the Vandenesse marriage. She is not a villain but something more unsettling: a living reminder that Félix's heart was educated elsewhere, and that his wife Marie-Angélique is his second chance rather than his first love. Her ball, her presence at the opera, her very way of dressing become occasions for Marie to measure herself against a rival she can never quite dismiss.
