> Eugénie in A Daughter of Eve by Honoré de Balzac.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Marie-Eugénie, poor Eugénie

**First appearance:** 0002-i-the-two-maries

## Snapshot

Marie's younger sister and confidante, she lends her cleverness to secret errands and reads her sister's heart with a sister's unsparing clarity.

## Who they are

Eugénie moves through the opera and the family circle as Marie's trusted ally, devising the discreet pretexts by which money reaches the old German musician Schmucke. Quick to laugh and quicker to see through men's performances, she teases Marie about restoring Raoul to life with a glance. Her loyalty and sharp eye make her the quiet witness to her sister's peril, and her presence sharpens the contrast between the two sisters' temperaments and fates.
