# Du Tillet — A Daughter of Eve character guide

> Du Tillet in A Daughter of Eve by Honoré de Balzac.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** du Tillet, Lost Du Tillet

**First appearance:** 0001-a-daughter-of-eve

## Snapshot

A cold-eyed banker who clawed his way from nothing into the salons of Paris, and who watches his wife's family with the patience of a man collecting debts.

## Who they are

Du Tillet is a financier whose wealth buys him a seat at the table but never quite the ease of those born to it, and he knows it. He treats his wife Eugénie with a contempt that is both marital and social, dragging her before the candles to interrogate her about her sister's secrets, and his suspicion of the Vandenesse household becomes a slow-burning threat. His presence in the story matters because he represents the new money that will not be charmed or outmaneuvered, and because the information he gathers about Nathan's debts gives him leverage over the very people who condescend to him.
