# Delphine de Nucingen — A Daughter of Eve character guide

> Delphine de Nucingen in A Daughter of Eve by Honoré de Balzac.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** the Baronne Delphine de Nucingen, de Nucingen, Delphine

**First appearance:** 0001-a-daughter-of-eve

## Snapshot

A fashionable banker's wife whose salon and sympathies make her a natural confidante, and whose own compromises have taught her exactly what a woman in trouble needs.

## Who they are

Delphine de Nucingen moves through the same opera boxes and dinner tables as Marie and Eugénie, a woman whose marriage to a wealthy banker has given her position but not necessarily happiness. When Eugénie du Tillet needs help for her sister's desperate scheme, it is to Delphine that she turns, sensing a woman who has known her own share of difficult bargains. Her presence in the story matters because she represents the practical network of women who sustain each other beneath the surface of a society that pretends to be indifferent to their struggles.
