> Lord Belpher in A Damsel in Distress by P. G. Wodehouse.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Belpher, The Belpher

**First appearance:** 0002-i

## Snapshot

Maud's pompous brother, freshly twenty-one and swollen with self-importance, whose wounded dignity fuels his campaign against George.

## Who they are

Percy, now Lord Belpher, takes himself with a seriousness that makes his own misfortunes unbearable and everyone else's hilarious. A limping, seething young aristocrat, he sees George as an interloper and his sister's independence as an insult to the family name, and he pursues both grievances with a baffled fury that reduces his weight by ounces a day. His obstruction is the engine of the novel's middle act: every attempt he makes to guard Maud only tightens the knot he is trying to cut.
