# Billie Dore — A Damsel in Distress character guide

> Billie Dore in A Damsel in Distress by P. G. Wodehouse.

**Role:** supporting

**Also known as:** Bill, Willis, Dore

**First appearance:** 0005-iv

## Snapshot

A breezy American chorus girl whose blunt good sense and loyalty to George cut through English drawing-room pretense like a gust of fresh air.

## Who they are

Billie is a Broadway performer transplanted to London, all slang and sympathy, the kind of friend who notices when George's heart is breaking while the rest of the world carols about the sunshine. Her American directness makes her an outsider in the castle's coded social rituals, and she uses that vantage to see through schemes that gentler souls miss. She matters because she gives George both practical help and the unvarnished truth, and because her presence quietly mocks the very conventions the plot depends on.
